Job Description:

Does the smell of freshly ground coffee and beautiful rows of freshly baked pastries make you indescribably happy? Do friends and family turn to you when looking for the best latte, cold brew, or croissant in the area? Do you experience secondary bliss when you see someone enjoying the drink you made or the baked treat you recommended? 

When you step into A Sanctuary Cafe, our espresso bar and pastry case are the first things you see. Our made-to-order drinks and extensive pastry and dessert offerings feature some of the greater Boston area’s best local roasters, tea experts, and bakers, and are served by our wonderful baristas. Baristas are an integral part of our customer and community experience, helping prepare orders for here and to go, as well as offering information about the cats and our cat lounge experience. Above all, collaboration is key; baristas put a lot of time and effort into crafting our seasonal drinks, discovering new methods of efficiency, and keeping open lines of communication to ensure consistent quality. As part of a close-knit team, baristas also work closely with our booksellers and cat mavens to ensure guests have the best possible experience, including the occasional mild blurring of responsibilities to best support each other. We retain a small and mighty staff! 

If your favorite part of working at a cafe is connecting with customers and brightening someone’s day with a perfect dose of caffeine, this may be the job for you! While barista experience is preferred, we encourage anyone who meets our requirements to apply and are happy to train the right person. 

Requirements (please do not apply if you do not meet ALL of these):

• Genuine interest in making sure ALL visitors feel welcome

• Community-oriented and enjoy building relationships with “regulars,” and staff

• Full-time availability (40 hours/week)

• Long-term commitment

• Ability to work mornings and weekends (A Sanctuary Cafe is open Wednesday through Sunday and closed Monday & Tuesday)

• Ability to maneuver 40 pound containers

• Ability to work onsite (this position has no remote work)

• Background in food service

• Interest in coffee, including learning how to pull a golden shot and steam the perfect microfoam

Preferred Experience:

• Have lived in the greater Boston area for at least 3 years (hiring local is one of our core values)

• 1+ year of recent barista experience

Hourly Rate: $23.50 plus tips (approx. $5-8/hour)
