Job Description:
Does the smell of freshly ground coffee and beautiful rows of freshly baked pastries make you indescribably happy? Do you experience secondary bliss when you see someone enjoying the drink or baked treat that you just handed to them? Are you known to friends and family as someone who is always eager to see a cute cat photo or discuss a new book?
One of our favorite compliments from visitors is that A Sanctuary Cafe has “all of their favorite things” in one place, with our beautiful cafe, lovingly curated book selection, and (of course) cats! We are looking for someone who is passionate about all of these things and has a particular interest in gaining cafe experience.
When you step into A Sanctuary Cafe, our espresso bar and pastry case are the first things you see. Our made-to-order drinks and extensive pastry and dessert offerings feature some of the greater Boston area’s best local roasters, tea experts, and bakers, and are served by our wonderful cafe team. You’ll help prepare orders for here and to go, offer information about the cats and our cat lounge experience, as well as check in reservations to the cat lounge. For this position, we estimate 75% of the time will be spent on these cafe tasks and 25% will be in the bookstore, checking out customers and managing reservations. Both teams are an integral part of our customer and community experience and we are proud to have a small but mighty team of incredibly kind, passionate people who are multi-tasking champions and equally great at helping each other and our visitors.
If your favorite part of a job is connecting with customers and brightening someone’s day, we’d love to hear from you! While barista experience is preferred, we encourage anyone who meets our requirements to apply and are happy to train the right person.
Requirements (please do not apply if you do not meet ALL of these):
Genuine interest in making sure ALL visitors feel welcome
Community-oriented and enjoy building relationships with “regulars,” and staff
Weekend availability and a willingness to occasionally work weekdays
Commitment through the summer and well into the fall season
Ability to work mornings and weekends (this position requires you to work all Saturdays and Sundays, on rare occasions as early as 7:30 A.M.)
Background in customer service
Ability to maneuver 40 pound containers
Ability to work onsite (this position has no remote work)
Interest in coffee, including learning how to pull a golden shot and steam the perfect microfoam
Preferred Qualifications:
Have lived in the greater Boston area for at least 3 years (hiring local is one of our core values!)
Barista experience
Food service experience
A passion for cats, books, and reading!
